Ten magical things to do at night in Broome

Tropical nights lend themselves to romantic moments, a leisurely dinner in the moonlight, walks through deepening twilight, rides on camels in the sunset, drinks at Matsos Brewery iconic brewery, sauntering through Chinatown’s night markets, feasting your way through the pop up food stalls at Staircase to the Moon at Riddell’s Beach. Broome is a great place to have a good time day and night.  Here is some inspiration to get you going.

1
OUTDOOR CINEMA

Tropical warmth is a perfect place to capture the atmosphere of an outdoor cinema. Broome’s Sun Gardens, built in 1913, Sun Pictures is the oldest, still-in-operation, outdoor cinema that will provide a truly unique evening in Broome. Unlike most outdoor cinemas, Sun Pictures screens multiple films each night, with rustic canvas deck chairs, under the star or shelter if damp or seated directly on the grass in front of the screen. Being a classic cinema is almost compulsory to buy popcorn and an ice cream. A great family experience that does not cost the earth.

2
STARGAZING WITH SPACE GANDALF

Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours if you have never been interested in astronomy then this is one guided experience to convert the most reluctant visitor. Greg Quicke is the teller of stories, a narrator of the stars creating a magical world view that entrances his audience. The two hour tour finds planets with very big telescopes and gossip about all things in the planetary universe.

Space Gandalf is a self-taught astronomer who runs extremely popular stargazing talks at his property on the outskirts of Broome. Space Gandalf gets his name thanks to his bushy white beard and his fondness for wearing interesting hats, and many will know him from his regular appearances on ABC radio. Forward bookings are essential for this very popular night time activity.

3
DINNER AT THE CABLE BEACH CLUB RESORT

A Broome sunset, a delicious meal surrounded by tropical palms while you watch the sun merging into the grey edges of the horizon.  Dine at Cable Bay Beach Club Sunset Bar & Grill and Cicchetti Club. Combine with a Cable Bay sunset camel ride for an iconic instagram / Facebook photo.

STAIRCASE TO THE MOON

Several days in the month between March and October, locals and tourists flock to Broome’s Town Beach for a full moon. The moonlight rising over Roebuck Bay, gleams reflected light off the extensive tidal flats, creating an optical illusion that resembles steps ascending into the dusk sky.

TIP Mangrove Hotel – this iconic Hotel in Broome WA is a bayside escape of unparalleled style and service is a perfect vantage point however you will need to book a meal as random visitors are actively discouraged due to the issue with overcrowding. The Bay Club restaurant & bar overlooking Roebuck Bay.

For visitors who simply want to while away the night enjoying the spectacle of staircase to the moon Town Beach is the venue for the Staircase Markets, where shoppers can stock up on handmade gifts, and enjoy a foodie experience from the pop up stalls. BEACH SUNSET PHOTO MOMENT AT RIDDEL BEACH

8
JETTY PHOTO MOMENTS

Twilight, deepening skies on the 3.4 km (one way) walk showcases Broome’s cultural heritage meandering through Streeter’s Jetty and the old Jetty. A mobile app is downloadable and a complimentary map from the visitor centre. Plan to finish your walk at Streeters Jetty with the light on the mangroves, water and sky. A great photo location.

9
NIGHTLIFE

Broome nightlife revolves around the bars and cafes where a tropical cocktail is sometimes guaranteed to keep the insects away. Due to the influx of tourists, visitors and backpackers the town is not a quiet laid back night destination. If you are after a zen like stay location be sure to book accommodation that is not next to several nightclubs and bars.
