Swimming

Nelson, South Island

1km north of Murchison Township on the River View road turnoff, past the cemetery.

Murchisons best kept local secret is the swimming hole known as the ‘Eel hole’.

The hidden gem has even got a rope to swing into the cool Buller River with large boulders to climb on. There are no lifeguards, water safety should be practiced at all times. And since there are eels in the river, locals have been harvesting eels for hundreds of years. Eel lines can be obtained from the local hardware store, Hodgsons. Best time for eeling is dusk. Do not enter the river at any time in flood or prolonged rain.
